Beyond Faucet to Flush: Cimarron Youth Dive into the City’s Hidden Systems
On Saturday, November 15th, Cimarron’s Youth Leadership Advisory Council took a deep dive—literally and figuratively—into the systems that keep their city running. What began as a simple phrase, “faucet to flush,” quickly transformed into a powerful lesson on infrastructure, responsibility, and the unseen work that sustains everyday life.
The day began with a city tour that followed the journey of water from its source to its return to the earth. At the water tower and wells, students learned how water is drawn, stored, and delivered with precision and care. But the real eye-opener came when they followed the water’s path after it leaves homes and businesses.
At the lift station, they discovered that Cimarron processes an average of 137,000 gallons of wastewater every day—a mix of what’s flushed and what shouldn’t be. The group learned that non-flushable items like wipes, hygiene products, and even toys often clog the system. To combat this, the city uses cameras to inspect underground pipes and routinely cleans the sewer lines to prevent backups and damage.
They were surprised to learn that once wastewater leaves the lift station, it takes 120 days to complete its journey through the treatment process before being safely released into the wetlands—a slow, steady cycle of purification and return to nature.
The tour also highlighted the challenges Cimarron faces with aging infrastructure. Many of the city’s water lines are too small to meet today’s flow demands, and miles of clay sewer pipes—some decades old—require ongoing maintenance and eventual replacement. These issues come with significant costs, often addressed through a mix of grants and low-interest loans.
Back at City Hall, the council reviewed the city’s budget, gaining insight into how these infrastructure projects are prioritized and funded.
To wrap up, students completed a SWOT analysis of themselves and their city, reflecting on leadership and infrastructure. The tour gave them a new perspective: water is more than faucet to flush—it’s about responsibility, systems, and sustainability. They left City Hall not just informed, but with a deeper sense of responsibility for the future of Cimarron.

Exciting News for Cimarron Families!

We’re thrilled to announce that the City of Cimarron has received a $5,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas to help bring a toddler playground to life at Cimarron Crossing Park!

This new play area will be located next to the old shelter house, making it easier for families to enjoy gatherings, cookouts, and celebrations while keeping their littlest ones safe and in sight. No more chasing toddlers across the park — now moms, dads, and caregivers can relax and visit with guests while the little ones play nearby.

A huge thank you to the Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas for supporting our vision of a more inclusive and family-friendly park experience!
